2016 Dinner
END OF SEASON DINNER DANCE and PRIZE GIVING
On Saturday the 18th of June 94 members and their guests attended our end of season dinner dance and prize giving around the pool at the fantastic Tamisa Hotel. This is a stunning location overlooking Mijas Los Lagos golf course. I have to say all of the ladies looked fantastic, and surprisingly the guys scrubbed up well too! The night started with Cava and canapés. There was, as you would expect, the compulsory reliving of every game and shot throughout the year. With all the talk of what might have been if only they had used a different club or had not topped the ball!! Or even in some cases describing how they had used the right club. It was not surprising that many of the ladies were more interested in who had bought what dress or shoes.
After all this banter it was then time to sit down for dinner. After a superb meal with plenty of wine and beer. Before the prize giving it was time for the speeches, thankfully for all mine was very short.
The prizes awarded tonight were for our three major ongoing competitions, The Order of Merit, the Champion of Champions and the Knock out Competition. These were the culmination of everybody's efforts to see who will be the best player in our society.
The Order of Merit
This award is given to our most consistent player throughout the year. This year for the first time we had a tie for the award. Simon Waby and Jerry Halford both scoring 264 points. Going into the last game of the season we all thought Jerry had won as he was 25 points clear of Simon. All he had to do was score one point. But unfortunately for Jerry this was not to be. Simon won the game and scored 25 points unfortunately for Jerry he did not come in with a good enough score to be awarded any points. Therefore the Order of Merit was a tie.
The Champion of Champions
The winners of the last game of each month go forward to play in the Champion of Champions final played out on the last Thursday in May. This year the final was held at Santana with another hard fought game. There were only three points separating the top three places. In the end Bill Giles was declared the winner after beating Simon Waby into second place by one point.
The Knock out Competition
This is open to all members with the heats being played throughout the year. After all the heats were played it was Bill Giles and Pat Gallet who went through to the final. What an exciting final it was. With Bill 3 up going into the 14th it looked like a win for Bill. But, no it was not to be. Pat pulled it back to draw level at the end of 18 holes. The win finally went to Pat who had a better back nine.
Well done to all of our winners.
As I said earlier it was another superb year. My thanks to all our members who have shown us their support throughout the year, we have had a great year’s golf plus a lot of fun along the way. Our growing membership shows that we are the society to belong to. I am pleased to say have we have once again gained many new active members. This is shown in the amount of players, I use that word loosely, we have every week. An average of 42 with highest being 56.
I have to say a big thank you both to Bill Giles for organising the dinner and getting sponsors for every game and to Simon Waby who updates our fabulous web site and looks after the handicaps. Not forgetting the long suffering Trish, Kimberly and the staff at the Red Dragon, who despite the ongoing road works out side of the bar for almost a twelve month managed to serve us with a smile.
It was then time for the party to begin. We danced and drank the night away to the music and singing of Ricky Lavazza. Despite the amount of alcohol consumed I am pleased to say no one fell in the pool, Although I am told it was a very close thing for a few. I am sure there were a few sore heads the next morning, I know mine was. They told me I had a great time. What I do know from your comments everyone had, fun it was yet another great night. Our thanks to John Peach and his team at the Tamisa for a superb night.
The next major event is our version of The Ryder Cup. The North versus the south of England. This is our 11th Ryder Cup with North up 6 to 4. As is the norm now this will be a three day event from the 13th – 17th September. We are staying at the Hotel Elba Costa Ballena with two rounds of golf at the Costa Ballena Ocean Golf Club. Our two captains Bill Giles & Bob Sawyer are once again getting their teams ready to do battle. I am sure it will be another great trip.
