2018 Dinner Dance
END OF SEASON DINNER DANCE and PRIZE GIVING
This is our main event of our golf season and is held every year on the terrace around the swimming pool at the fantastic Tamisa Hotel. What a wonderful way to spend a warm summers evening in this stunning location overlooking Mijas Los Lagos golf course. 90 plus members, partners and guests got together for a meal, dancing and not forgetting a few drinks and, for those who have some, let their hair down. I have to say all of the ladies looked fantastic, and surprisingly the guys scrubbed up well too. What a great way to celebrate another year with our society.
On arrival we were greeted with Cava and a fabulous selection of canapés. Whilst they were being served, yes you’ve guessed it was time for our members to relive every shot of every game throughout the year. Talk of what might have been. Why did I use that club, why did I top the ball etc.? There were even a few complaining that they couldn’t understand why their ball went into the rough or into the lake. It will come as no surprise that the main topic from our ladies was not the golf but centred on who and where they had bought what dress, handbag or pair of shoes, or even the best restaurants to eat at.
It was then time to sit down for dinner. The meal was as usual superb with plenty of wine and beer for everyone. Once the meal was finished it was time for the speeches, thankfully for everybody mine was very short.
It is also the time when we present our awards for our yearly ongoing competitions. So it was then on to the prize giving.
Throughout the year we have three major ongoing competitions, “The Order of Merit”, “The Champion of Champions” and “The Knock out Competition”. The winners of these were being awarded their prizes tonight. This is the culmination of everybody's efforts to see who will be the best player in our society.
The Order of Merit
This award is given to our most consistent player throughout the year. This year it went to the Bob Sawyer with 246 points closely followed by Patrique Gallet and Sue Cobb
The Champion of Champions
The winner of the last game of each month goes forward to play in the Champion of Champions final. This year the final was held on the 7th June at Guadalhorce. With the course in its usual superb condition and the greens fast it proved to be quite difficult for some us. But not for our winner Patrique Gallet. He came in with a magnificent score of 41 points. Second was Jerry Halford and third was Bob Sawyer.
The Knock out Competition
This is open to all members. The heats for our third knockout competition were played throughout the 5 months from January to May. It was finally whittled down to two. So at Lauro in early June, with the course in wonderful condition there was an exciting final between, Sue Cobb and Tony Anderson. Unfortunately, Sue couldn’t manage her third win as she was beaten on the last hole by Tony.
Well done to all of our winners. As I said earlier it was another superb year. My thanks to all our members who have shown us their support throughout the year, we have had a great year’s golf plus a lot of fun along the way. Our growing membership shows that we are the society to belong to. This is shown in the amount of players; we have every week. An average of 45 with highest being 56. I am pleased to say we have once again gained many new active members. However, as I have said before, looking at the age of most of us I use the word active loosely.
Whilst everyone is eager to help out, on behalf of myself and our society I would like to say a big thank you to the following.
Bill Giles for organising another fantastic dinner dance.
Patrique Gallet for organising our sponsors each week.
But most importantly a great big thank you to Sue Cobb and Lynn Yuill who every week try to decipher the writing on our score cards to work out who has won and what handicap changes should be applied. Looking at some of the cards this is not an easy job.
Finally, not forgetting the long-suffering Trish, Kimberly and the staff at the Red Dragon who supply us with food and drink after very game.
It was then time for the party to begin. We danced and drank the night away to the music and singing of the fabulous Johnny G. What a fantastic entertainer. His singing and music kept everyone dancing all night. What I do know from your comments everyone had a super time. It was a great night. Our thanks to John Peach and his team at the Tamisa for their food and first-class service.
