March 2017
Santana - 30th March 2017
Today’s game at Santana was a very special day for us. It was the Jack Wilson Memorial Day. Today was Jack's Day and as always we played a Texas Scramble. It was a beautiful sunny day and the course was in its usual superb condition. Which made for a great days golf. It was good to see Gina playing with their grandson Jack jnr. Texas scramble is a great fun format and today was no exception, especially if in our team where, despite our difficulty in putting, we had a super and hilarious day. To make the day even funnier everyone had to wear a silly hat, and I have to say there were some superb ones. The prize for the silliest hat went to Peter Bull. Well done to everyone for taking part. It was then back to the Red Dragon for the prize giving. It was great to see Jack's family here helping us to remember a great man, with the prizes being presented by Jack' grandchildren Todays winners with a net score of 60.5 was David and Gayle Laybourn, Tony Sidebottom and Tim Hemming. Second with a score of 62.3 was Robert Lawless, Roy Sherratt, Len Wood and Bob Brown. Third with a score of 63.5 was Ian Ashworth, Eddy Magnall, Alan Fisher and Bill Perkins. Nearest the pin on one on the par three's was, Robert Lawless on hole 2, Les Malpass on hole 7, Alan Perkins, hole 16 Colin "Badger" Bryan, despite the fact that reaching the age of 70 he forgot to write his name on the card we still gave the prize to him. After the prize giving Jack's granddaughter went on to say a few words and we then raised our glasses to a great friend. After this the party started with everyone enjoying a drink in the sun and telling their stories about the "Big Fella". Our thanks to Gina for the super prizes and a special thanks to Trish, Kimberly and the staff at the Red Dragon who worked hard keeping supplied with the food and not forgetting the drinks. Calanova - 23rd March 2017
Today’s game at Calanova was sponsored by Larry Byrne. and was individual stableford. It was also our end of month competition with the winner going forward to the "Champion of Champions" final. This is first time we have played here for some time and all agreed the course was difficult but in good condition. However on the windiest day for some time it proved even more difficult than usual. It is bad enough getting the ball to go where you want it in normal conditions but in the very strong winds it was nigh impossible. This was reflected in the low scores this week. Our winner today playing off 23.5 cut to 22.5 was Keith Jones. Second also with 32 points but with a worse back nine playing off 18.7 cut to 18.5 was Ray Mays. Third with 31 points playing off 17.1 cut to 16.8 was Andy Pritchard. The guest prize was won by Carl Proctor. Nearest the pin in one on hole 6 was Bob Sawyer with Alan Shankland nearest the pin in two on hole 12. Our thanks to Larry for the great prizes. El Higueral - 16th March 2017 Today’s game at El Higueral was sponsored by Alan and Ruth Thompson. The format was a "Champagne Scramble". This caused quite a lot of disappointment from some of our members who thought they were going to get a glass of champagne on every hole!!!! Once everyone had fathomed out the rules this turned out to be a great format. Despite the unusually cold weather, with the course in its usual good condition, every one had a fun day. The winning team was Sue Cobb, Terry Smith and Ray Critcher. Second was Any Hassall, Larry Byrne, Tony Anderson and Pat Gallet. Third was Robyn Wheeler, Norman Tillbrook, Luke Tillbrook and David Manicom. Out thanks to Ruth and Alan for the great prizes. The Parador - 9th March 2017
Today’s game at The Parador was a very special day for our society. It was when we remembered our good friend and founder member Micky Gillingham who sadly passed on to the big putting green in the sky. We were playing for the Micky Gillingham Shield with day being sponsored by the Red Dragon. The game was individual stableford. On a beautiful warm and sunny day a full house of members and friends set out to play and remember Micky. Today we were also joined by a young golf professional Matt Mumford. The fairways were not in their usual suburb condition, however the greens were and called for pretty accurate putting. The winner of the Micky Gillingham Trophy with a magnificent score of 41 points playing off 15.6 cut to 13.2 was Tony Anderson. Second with 35 points playing off 32.9 cut to 32.1 was Ruth Thompson. Third with 32 points playing of 18.5 cut to 18.2 was Catherine Shiels. Our guest prize was won be Der Carolan. Nearest the pin in one on hole 13 was Bob Sawyer with Matt Mumford nearest the pin in two on hole 3. It was then back to the Red Dragon to raise a glass to Micky and to recount the many stores about him. Lauro - 2nd March 2017 Today’s game at Lauro was sponsored by Pat O Connor and Peter Mc Donald and was for individual stableford. At last the sun came out for us to play golf. On a very warm and sunny day we played holes 19 to 9 at Lauro. Despite all the heavy rain the course was back in good condition. This was reflected in the scores. First with a magnificent 42 points playing off 21.6 cut to 18.2 was Barry Douglas. Second with 37 points playing off 17.6 cut to 16.7 was Pat Gallet and third with 35 points playing off 1.9 cut to 11.5 was Phil Ashcroft. There was a ladies prize today this went to Shan Ashcroft. The guest prize was won by Michel G. Nearest the pin in one on hole two was Peter Mc Donald with Norman Tillbrook nearest the pin in two on hole 24. Our thanks to Peter and Pat for the great prizes. |
